Fun read! But, be warned--DO NOT read it at night! Enjoyed all the shorts, but most of all the one about the tortured artist--creepy, scary. Be sure to pick this one up!
A strong collection of ten stories by Stephen King's former pupil. Standouts for me were "Rummy," a tale of a man whose "stubborn streak of decency" leads him down a desperate path; and "Bless Me, Father," the story of a writer willing to do anything for a book deal. Pick it up; you'll be glad you did!
I finished Halls of Horror a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed it very much. Each story represents a different type of horror, some types of which you wouldn't expect; which goes to show that horror can happen anywhere, if you have an open mind. My favorite story was Moose Tracks. I found it humorous in a black-comedy sort of way. Body English made me think, "this could be a baseline for a Criminal Minds episode." In fact, Kamikaze Hipsters came very close to an actual Criminal Minds episode, where a wanna-be artist did some interesting things to his paintings (I don't want to give too much away). I enjoyed Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes, so I am partial to Carnival of Pain. It brought back memories of the book and what it was like to be an adventurous little boy.
Mr. Phillips is a great writer who keeps the action flowing. Overall, a nice read.
I loved this collection of macabre short stories. Though I am not usually fond of horror, there was enough of a blend of the "normal" with twists of the macabre that it was very entertaining to read without scaring me to death! It was like reading episodes of "The Twilight Zone." I highly recommend it.
This is the first book by this author I've read and I have to say I will look for more. I really liked the writing style and the detail...and the stories weren't "overdone". I don't believe a review should be a synopsis of the book, so I'm not going to abbreviate what each story is about and rate it. I enjoyed the book immensely and suggest giving it a try for yourself!
