Freighter Captain Jess Sondijk has her life under control until the Confederacy’s Admiral Hudson boards her ship in a search for contraband. Sondijk and Hudson have their own set of questions.
For Jess, it’s a matter of her husband’s perhaps not so accidental death. For Hudson, it's that somebody's trading with the alien Ptorix – and offering them a large enough prize to induce them to part with their beloved starhearts, the jewels they call the windows of the soul.
While Jess’ interests are more personal — abducted friends and family — Hudson’s are broader — the end of his career at best and interspecies war at worst — in a deadly game of political intrigue, murder, and greed.
Which will win, following hearts' desires or chasing starhearts, with the stakes higher than either is willing to pay?
This book contains sex scenes and strong language.
Starheart Ptorix Empire Book 3 eBook Greta van der Rol
This is the 4th book I've read by Van der Rol and again I am very pleased. Fantastic world building and characters whom you can really get behind. If you're looking for romance, this is a minor component of the story with the mystery, thriller part of the story really taking center stage. I was hoping for more romantic scenes, but the author did such a wonderful job spinning out the story that I didn't mind. I really appreciate how the ending went and the HEA was arrived, not totally pat, but enough justice served. What I like best about this book is that it doesn't fall for the usual stereotypes of the heroine being either totally naive or totally cynical/warrior - the heroine was a mother of a teenager and she did have fond memories of her marriage. Also, as the synopsis indicates, she does engage in smuggling activities so she's not a saint. The admiral too isn't all knowing and has moments of feet of clay. I like that their relationship seemed to develop rather than mistaking instant lust for love.Reason for not giving it a full 5 stars: I would have liked more text on the hero, Admiral Hudson, rather than on the best friend. What was there on the scenes with the best friend in the mining world was great, but it felt odd and almost jarring to the storyline to have the focus on a person whom I would expect to be a minor character. I also found the extra marital affair unnecessary and distracting.
Anyway, I look forward to the next sci-fi story from this author, hopefully with more highlight on the romance.

Starheart Ptorix Empire Book 3 eBook Greta van der Rol Reviews
Another of the ptorix series and as always, it is fast paced with strong characters and romance. Well worth the cost, we'll worth your time.
This is a very fun space opera, science fiction romance. The writing is crisp and smooth, the book well edited, the characters well crafted and believable, and the romance was very fun. I really liked how the action ramped up slowly and then it just kicked into high, yanking me into a satisfying ending to both the story and the romance. A fun read!
Not usually the genre I read, but decided to read this and broaden my horizons....I'm glad I did. I enjoyed the story and gathered there are others about this main character that I must find and follow up on.
Well worth the read.
This book follows the CONCEPT of the original. It does not have as much story line other than romance. I was hoping for a more conceptual story. Also, the "bad guy" died in the 2nd book in the series, and he is alive in this one. Spooky - not good underwriting.
This is my first space opera, sci fi and I went into it a little sceptically. Thank you Greta!! The world you created had me fascinated and so impressed at all the details which made it so believable. And I loved the hard edge of the hero. It worked for me that he was always so tasky and focused - I found that sexy! Jess, the heroine was feisty, intelligent and, above all, a mother ready to scratch the eyes/heart out of anyone who came between herself and her daughter. This might have been my first of Greta's books but it won't be the last.
I've been a big fan of this author since I read her Iron Admiral series. I don't think this book is as good as that series but wonderful nevertheless. For anyone who may be wondering, it takes place in the same universe as the Iron Admiral series and technically, takes place prior to the start of that series. This books still stands alone very easily.
I loved Jess. She is a strong, sexy, kickass heroine who still has her vulnerable side. At first, I did not like the hero, Admiral Hudson. On their first date, he seems to essentially interrogate Jess about the death of her husband (not exactly sexy date conversation) and I didn't feel the chemistry. I also spent the first quarter of the book thinking that he is kind of a womanizing, arrogant tool. I eventually warmed up to him but I never fell in love with him. He definitely isn't one of my favorite heroes but I was still rooting for Jess to have a happily ever after with him.
The story is interesting and the universe is well thought out. Overall, it was a very enjoyable reading experience.
The action is great, the story well-told even when it follows several characters simultaneously. A sound premise for smuggling and slavery, and a pretty good romance, although it took a while for that to gel - there didn't seem to be much chemistry between them until well into the relationship.
It's also interesting to read a non-American author.
American romance writers generally are very politically correct and prefer euphemisms to the correct words - the villains "hurt" people when they actually "kill" them; characters don't "die", they "pass" (and the "over" is also usually left off, so one wonders what they pass, maybe a test?).
This Australian author cheerfully ignores euphemisms and shows the regrettable but realistic side of humanity in homophobia and xenophobia (the "ptorix" cleverly become "toe-rags"; or maybe it was vice-versa during the writing).
